Our Beloved Drupon Thinley Ningpo

Drikung Namgyal Ling and Arizona Friends of Tibet welcome our beloved teacher, Drupon Thinley Ningpo, back to Tucson from August 9th, 10th and 11th, 2024. We begin on Friday evening with a public talk at 7pm. Then, on Saturday and Sunday, teaching will begin at 10am and end at 5pm PST, with a break for lunch from 12-2pm.

August 9th: 7pm-9pm PST
August 10: 10am-5pm PST (lunch break: 12-2pm)
August 11: 10am-5pm PST (lunch break: 12-2pm)

Lojong, or mind training, serves as an invaluable method for applying Buddhist practice in everyday life. It makes use of slogans or aphorisms as a powerful, pithy, and practical means of developing bodhichitta. It particularly emphasizes the practice of “exchanging oneself for others.”

As practitioners we learn the importance of accumulating merit and wisdom, and nurturing love and compassion for all beings. During teachings or in the presence of our teachers and their living example, these key ideas can become very clear and inspirational, but after the teachings, when we are on our own, it’s easy to slip into old tendencies.

Lojong training counteracts the tendency to separate our “dharma” life from daily life so that we remember how to put the teachings into practice at all times, especially when we encounter difficulties and suffering, our own and others.

Initially introduced by Atisha in the 10th century, Lojong has taken many forms but one of the most famous texts, commonly referred to as “Seven Point Mind Training”, was composed by the 12th century master, Chekawa Yeshe Dorje.

Drupon Thinley Ningpo will guide us through this well-known text, elucidating the deeper meaning and history of these classic Buddhist slogans, and how they still apply to the modern age.
